In the first grade, we have been working on a couple of winter projects that involve Caldecott Medal books. As I explained to students, the Caldecott is given each year to an artist with the most distinguished picture book. We read two very famous Caldecotts during library class: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats and Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin. After reading The Snowy Day, we created artwork inspired by the story. Using Kerpoof.com, students told me about what they would do on a snowy day. While reading Snowflake Bentley, we found out that no two snowflakes are ever alike. Students made their own snowflakes (http://snowflakes.barkleyus.com/). Click on the video to see their creations:
Through these projects, students made connections to the texts and demonstrated the following standards:
-The ability to use technology to communicate and collaborate.
-Proficiency in the use of computers and a variety of applications.
-Adding drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts and feelings.
